Jamaica Index Jumps 2.4%, World Markets Extend Yearly Losses

7:00 PM January 13, Miami, Florida – Jamaica market indexes gained more than 2% despite another day of decline in stocks in New York and in Europe. Crude oil price drifted near 12-year low and China reported better-than-expected international trade data.

Caribbean markets advanced and Jamaica indexes led the gainers in the region with a surge of 2.4%.

Market indexes on Wall Street and in Europe traded lower after investors grappled with another 12-year lows in energy prices and the rising worries of the China slowdown spreading to other economies.

In Jamaica trading, The JSE Market Index advanced 3,767.19 or 2.4% to 160,847.44 and The JSE Select Index jumped 164.91 or 3% to 5,609.13.

Trinidad Composite Index added 0.50 to 1,163.67. Bahamas Stock Exchange Index increased 3.18 or 0.2% to 1,827.49.

Of the 28 stocks traded on Jamaica Stock Exchange, 14 increased, 9 decreased and 5 were unchanged.

Jamaican dollar traded near record low and average buy rate against the U.S. dollar was 120.10 and sell rate was 120.73, according to the Bank of Jamaica website.

In Kingston trading today, 3.61 million units changed hands worth J$34.29 million and Cable & Wireless Jamaica Limited led the most active list with 1.54 million units followed Berger Paints Jamaica Ltd. with 518,126 units.

Cable & Wireless Jamaica Limited increased 6 cents to J$1.46 and traded 1,543,691 shares and Sagicor Group Jamaica Limited soared 42 cents to J$23.49 and traded 266,030.

Scotia Group Jamaica Limited surged J$3.72 to J$34.23 and traded 158,508.

Berger Paints Jamaica Ltd. dropped 15 cents to J$3.23 and traded 518,126 shares and Scotia Investments Jamaica Ltd. plunged J$3.50 to J$25.14 and traded 121,032.

Carreras Limited tumbled J$1.14 to J$59.86 and traded 94,600.

Trinidad Market Overview

Trinidad Composite Index added 0.50 to 1,163.67 and of the 14 stocks traded 5 advanced, 3 declined and 6 closed unchanged.

National Commercial Bank Jamaica Limited led the most active list and gained 3 cents to TT$2.55 and traded 83,300 shares and Scotia Investments Jamaica Limited increased 2 cents to TT$1.52 and traded 7,000.

Guardian Holdings Limited added 2 cents to TT$13.44 and traded 5,000.
Trinidad and Tobago NGL Limited dropped 22 cents to TT$21.25 and traded 12,841 shares and Agostini”s Limited decreased 6 cents TT$16.95 and traded 11,000.

National Flour Mills Limited dropped 10 cents to TT$2.50 and traded 2,166.
